About the Doomscrolling Calculator and your privacy

Short answer

The Doomscrolling Calculator is a free tool published by Influish that turns a daily scrolling habit into weekly, yearly and long-term totals using formulas we publish in full. It runs entirely in your browser: nothing you type is sent to a server, stored or shared. It gives estimates, not medical advice.

Why did we build it?

Many screen-time calculators online don’t say how they work or which assumptions they make. We wanted one that is transparent (every formula is on how the calculator works), private by design, and useful for planning, with a scenario comparison and downloadable results, rather than a single alarming number.

Who publishes it?

This site is published by Influish and maintained by the Influish Editorial Team. In November 2026, Influish was in the news for a reported “doomscroller” job post (see, for example, India Today’s report); this calculator is a general-purpose tool and is not part of any hiring process. Using it has no bearing on any application. We are not a news organisation, and no organisation we cite has endorsed this tool.

What happens to the numbers I enter?

  • No network requests. The calculator makes no calls to any server. Calculations happen in a small script on your device.
  • No storage. We don’t use cookies, local storage or accounts for the calculator. Close the tab and your inputs are gone.
  • Downloads are local. The CSV and text files are generated in your browser and saved directly to your device.
  • No analytics on inputs. The site may count anonymous clicks on links to official destinations for aggregate measurement, but never what you type into the calculator.

How was it built and tested?

The maths is a set of pure functions kept separate from the page design, covered by automated tests that check the worked example on the methodology page, edge cases such as zero sleep or 24 hours of input, and the exact contents of both downloads. The page is static HTML, so it shows a sensible default result (2 hours a day) even before the script loads.

What are its limits?

The calculator measures time only. It can’t tell whether your scrolling is helping or harming you, and its projection assumes your habit never changes. Read what your results mean for context, and see a doctor or counsellor if you are worried about your wellbeing.

How do I report an error?

If you spot a calculation error, a broken link or a misdescribed source, please tell us through the contact details on Influish’s website. We fix confirmed errors promptly, update the page’s “Updated” date, and add a test for any calculation bug.
