Doomscrolling calculator: how much time do Reels and feeds take?

By Influish Editorial Team · Published

Short answer

Enter how long you scroll on a typical day and how many days a week. The calculator multiplies that out to weekly, monthly (30.44-day) and yearly (365.25-day) totals, shows the share of your waking hours it takes, and projects it over the years you choose. The example below starts at 2 hours a day; change it to your own number.

How do I find my real daily scrolling time?

Guesses are unreliable, so start with the numbers your phone already keeps. On most Android phones, open Settings and look for Digital Wellbeing; the dashboard lists screen time per app (see Google’s Digital Wellbeing help). On iPhone, open Settings > Screen Time to see your activity (see Apple’s Screen Time guide). Many apps, including Instagram, also show your recent time inside their own settings. Menu names change between versions and phone makers, so look for words like “screen time”, “wellbeing” or “your activity”.

A daily average over a week is better than a single day. If your use is very different on weekdays and weekends, enter your typical scrolling day and set days per week to match. If you think in Reels rather than minutes, try the Reels time calculator, which estimates time from the number of Reels you watch.

What does each result mean?

  • Per week, month and year are straight multiplications of your daily figure, using average month and year lengths.
  • Full days divide hours by 24, so “38 days” means 38 complete 24-hour days, not 38 waking days.
  • Waking time compares your scrolling with the hours you are awake (24 minus your sleep), which is a fairer comparison than the whole day.
  • Over N years projects today’s habit forward, assuming it stays the same, which real habits rarely do.

Every formula is written out, with a worked example, on how the calculator works. For context on whether your number is “a lot” and why minutes alone don’t measure harm, read what your results mean.

Why compare scenarios instead of just showing a total?

A big yearly total can feel discouraging. Small, specific changes are easier to act on, and the comparison table shows how much each one is worth over a year and over your chosen horizon. Cutting 15 minutes a day, every day, frees roughly 91 hours a year. Add your own target to see exactly what it would give back.

Is anything I type saved or shared?

No. The calculator is a small script that runs entirely on your device. There are no accounts, cookies or analytics on your inputs, and the downloads are built in your browser. The full details are on our about and privacy page.

Frequently asked questions

Is this calculator accurate?

The arithmetic is exact and published on our methodology page, but the result can only be as accurate as the daily time you enter. For the best estimate, use the screen-time figure from your phone's own settings rather than a guess.

Does the calculator store or send my data?

No. Every calculation happens in your browser. There is no sign-up, no server request and no storage of what you type. The CSV and text downloads are generated on your device.

What counts as scrolling time?

Whatever you want to measure: all social media, one app such as Instagram, or only the time that felt like doomscrolling. Just be consistent when you compare results over time.

Why does a month use 30.44 days?

Months vary from 28 to 31 days. An average year has 365.25 days, which divided by 12 is about 30.44, so monthly totals are comparable whichever month you are in.
